The bibliography is an integral part of the research process, yet for many students the most confusing. This lesson plan reviews bibliography formats for print and non-print materials and introduces an online method of preparation. A PowerPoint presentation, guided practice, and how-to information sheets address the many learning styles of students.

How to Write a Bibliography
Objective
Students will know how and where to find bibliographic information in a variety of print and non-print sources on an assigned topic, and prepare a bibliography online using Citation Maker.
Time Required
One forty-minute period for skills review and instruction. Additional forty-minute periods for data collection and bibliography preparation.
Prerequisites
Basic understanding of the purpose and requirements for a bibliography.
Materials
- Laptop computer, projector, and SMART Board
- Handouts: Bibliography and Research Notes, Worksheets, Citation Maker directions
- Computer stations with Internet access
Procedure
DAY ONE
- Classroom teacher will discuss topics and project requirements.
- Library/Media Specialist will introduce lesson with a review of print and non-print sources available and a brief discussion on the purpose of a bibliography.
- Students will view Citing Sources PowerPoint Slide Show.
- Library/Media Specialist will distribute and discuss Bibliography and Research Notes and Citation Maker directions hand-outs.
- Library/Media Specialist will introduce Citation Maker and guide students in a hands-on practice bibliography.
DAY TWO AND THREE
Students find sources of information on their topic and record data and bibliographic information on their Research Notes Worksheet.
DAY 4
Students prepare a bibliography of sources using Citation Maker.
Evaluation
- Classroom teacher will assess project for content, spelling, and grammar.
- Media Specialist will evaluate bibliography information accuracy and bibliographic format and spelling.
