                                                            September 2009

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to an exciting  2009 / 2010 school year.  This is a graduation year for your children and as we proceed through this year together, we be working on the development of a stronger foundation in each  subject.

This year we will be using Prentice Hall's Pre-Algebra Book.  This is an interactive book with a tutorial. This book will take your learning to a new computerized interactive level.

The book's objective is to take the student through guided problem solving in class and at home.  It provides you with an interactive Prentice Hall website:

Once on the website, you will choose the appropriate web code given in the book to assist your learning objectives.  Together we will be able to help our children have a successful year in grade 8 math.  In addition to your continued support I request that you provide you child with the following classroom supplies.

DAILY SUPPLIES :
Textbook is brought to class daily
2 Marble Notebooks ( 1 will be kept in class as a journal)
1 graphing notebook
1 assignment notebook
2 to 3 sharpened pencils (daily)
1 red pen
1 blue or black pen
1 folder
1 pencil sharpener
1 bookcover for the math text book

Online you will find 2 rubrics: one is a notebook rubric and the other is a project rubric.  Please have your child tape them in the front and back cover respectively.  The rubrics will guide you in the grading policy of notebooks and projects.

Class notebooks should be written in pencil  and the daily header should include: the date, page, and all modeled problems done in class.  These will be applicabe for homework reference.  Homework  should follow the same sequence and should include the assignment date, the page and problem number. HOMEWORK SHOULD SHOW ALL DETAILED WORK, not just answers.

I do give homework daily and students as well as parents can access it a
WWW.PS104.Com . If the student has an excused absence their missing homework will be due on the second day of their return. Tests will be assigned and posted on the website.  Included in this list is the grading policy for CLASSES:
8-314, 8-308, 8-316.   Please read and sign it, and return the tear off promptly to school.

Should you need to contact me you can email me at:
DGilibe@schools.nyc.gov and I will get back to you as quickly as possible.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and cooperation.
