Lesson Plan

Photosynthesis and Plant Reproduction by ECSDM

Course, Subject

Biology/Living Environment, Math, Science & Technology

Grade Levels

Commencement, 9th Grade, 10th Grade

To teach students the process and importance of photosynthesis, as well as the necessity of plant reproduction to sustain life.

Photosynthesis, including anatomy of the leaf and the basics of the equation, will be discussed. Basic plant parts for reproduction including methods of pollen transfer are included. SMART Board resources, as well as Unitedstreaming, will be utilized.

At the conclusion of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify layers of the leaf associated with photosynthesis
  • Complete the word and/or chemical equation for photosynthesis
  • Label the reproductive organs of flowers
  • Understand the various methods

  • SMART Board
  • LCD projector
  • Internet
  • Unitedstreaming access
  • student copies of any slides of the presentation, as deemed appropriate by the instructor
  • plant parts.notebook
  • plant parts.pdf
  • Introduction

Students should be familiar with the basics of photosynthesis, including the terms:

    • Stomate
    • Air space
    • Chloroplast
    • Palisade layer
    • Spongy layer
    • Guard cells
    • Cuticle
    • Veins
    • Glucose
    • Chlorophyll

Students will be led through the presentation, which is a gradual progression from leaf and stem to a guided review of the parts of the leaf involved in photosynthesis. A brief video will ensue, followed by an exercise using the Magic Eraser of the SMART Board to review leaf parts. Then, a visual of the process of photosynthesis will be examined. Parts of the flower will be discussed. Then male and female parts elaborated upon, as well as pollination and the creation of a new organism.

Students will be holistically evaluated, as judged by their participation in filling in the parts of the leaf, equation for photosynthesis, and reproductive organs.
