Introduction to Victorian London and "A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley" by ECSDM

This lesson is designed to build background information about the setting and time period for the play, "A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley." The lesson is a useful tool in preparing students for some of the social and cultural issues of the time period in London, England when the play "A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley" takes place.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • identify where London and England are on a map.
  • identify the social issues of the 1800s in London.
  • think critically about how their lives would have been different if they were living in that time period.
  • make predictions about the story and how the characters may be portrayed based on the background information.


  • Class set of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol or class set of one of the versions of the play "Scrooge and Marley"

  • Step-by-Step Procedure

    1. Students will be pre-assessed for information regarding A Christmas Carol. They will be asked questions in the form of a DO NOW. Have you ever heard of Scrooge? Have you ever seen a movie about ghosts of Christmas?
    2. The teacher will compile a list of the things the students come up with to assess their prior knowledge. The teacher will then tell the students they will be reading the play version of the story. (Many students will know something about the play before beginning.)
    3. The teacher will inform the students that the play takes place in another country and time period. The students will then watch a clip of "Oliver Twist" or "A Christmas Carol" and the students will be given the opportunity to draw conclusions about the time period, clothing, and the differences between today and then. A clip that could possibly be used is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hA5T1G7rxg.
    4. The teacher will then go to the second page of the SMART Board Presentation and ask students to label the map. Once students understand setting and where London and England are they can move on to the next page.
    5. Students will need to take a few notes in your handout Guided Notes and the teacher will explain how people worked in Victorian London. An attached outline will help students take the notes. (See Support Materials: guided notes Christmas.)
    6. Advance to the next page in the SMART Board and have students sort the boxed information under the right category using the knowledge from the previous slide.
    7. Students can then work on education for boys and predict what it is like for girls on page 6. The teacher can ask students how their education is different than Victorian London and which they would prefer.
    8. Page 7 is a good place for discussion of each of the characteristics of the Victorian charity school. Each characteristic should be explained by the teacher and a discussion should follow.
    9. Slide 8 is an opportunity for students to begin brainstorming for a writing assignment to follow. A free write would be a good way to do pre-writing for an essay on life in Victorian London and the what they students' lives would have or not have. The writing assignment is attached with a rubric (See Support Materials below).
    10. Students can use the knowledge to begin predicting what will happen in the story and what types of characters they might meet.

    The students could use the link attached for the Webquest through ReadWriteThink.org. The Webquest has students use knowledge of the time period and of the play for a group project where each group creates a PowerPoint.
